yoursolace via this prompt song/vid. I stole a lyric and made it a piece of the fic. The title comes the mentioned song, as well. Originally posted here.
There are inches between them and it feels like miles. Jacob looks up from the ocean, his hand finding hers and squeezing it tight. He fights the pangs to wrap his arms around her, press his lips to her temple and promise everything, everything will be perfectly okay. This would be a lie, and Jacob can’t lie to her, not when her eyes search his own, begging for a comfort they both can’t give each other.
Jacob is surprised when Bella’s fingers lace between his own and the smile that dances its way across her expression makes his own mouth form the trademark grin that's always won Bella over.
“You are still my best friend, Jake.” Bella looks down, the smile starting to fade. “I don’t want this to be the last time I see you.”
Jacob takes her chin in his hand, their eyes meeting and the smallest of sparks lighting and igniting the air around them. One corner of his mouth goes up and he can’t stop the awkward chuckle that builds in his throat.
“I told you. I’m here. Even if you don’t pick me, but I’m hoping you do.” The smile that finally lights up Jacob’s face is forced and he laughs like he always does.
Bella mirrors him, leaning in and kissing his cheek. “It isn’t about picking, Jacob. It… it’s about knowing.”
Bella’s head lowers. She feels the sharp hint of tears building behind her closed eyes and screams at herself to stop, to not do this. Her body betrays her and her eyes tense shut.
Jacob's hand leaves hers and he replaces it with his arm around her shoulders. Bella lays her head against his shoulder and folds her hands in her lap.
Minutes pass before she can speak without choking back sobs. The slow patterns Jacob’s tracing into her arm soothe her and she takes the chance to look up into his eyes.
“I’ve tried to figure all of this out. I made lists, Jake. Lists. And it didn’t matter because when I shut my eyes I can only see one future that I can’t let go of.”
Jacob watches her silently as she struggles for words, knowing that his heart will break but hoping the pain will last, some lingering reminder of what he’d almost had.
“Jake. I don’t want to die. I don’t want eternity. I just want someone that loves me, who I don’t have to change for.” Every word gets stuck in Bella’s throat and sounds hoarse as she says it. “I want you, Jake. I know, without even a doubt, that I’ll regret it my entire life if I walk away from you.”
There is bravery and courage behind every syllable that leaves Bella’s lips. It takes him a second to soak what she’s said in, but her lips find his before he can speak. Her arms wrap around his neck, thin and fragile, holding on to her rock, her savior. Jacob can’t catch his breath, and he feels lightheaded when they finally part. Bella’s eyes are closed and his are focused on her, seeing her in a light he never thought he’d see her in.
