It had been too many nights, waiting by phones, at treaty lines, on front steps. Bella had begun to give up, fearing she’d never see her favorite smiling face again. And the wedding was so close, threatening every breathe she took.

But the phone finally rang, and the voice on the other end was finally finally the one she’d dreamed of, wished for. The receiver dropped to the ground, forgotten, and she was in her car before Charlie had a moment to ask.

It seemed like years from point a to point b but she counted down every mile, knowing that each minute was the last of the last she’d be without his warm arms, his smile, that laugh.

Bella closed her eyes as she turned into the driveway, feeling him before she ever laid eyes on him. And when she reopened them, his smile was right in front of her and relief washed over her.

Her hands fumbled with the handle, finally opening the door and being greeted with the warm brown eyes she’d almost forgotten. She fought the urge to jump right into his arms and stood before him awkwardly. He made the first move, always taking the initial step between them.

Bella breathed her words into his neck, her feet dangling from his embrace.

“Jake. Oh Jake. I missed you.”
