Everything was a rush of scenery, the trees whipped past in a blur, his own breath ragged without reason, and his mouth was so thick with venom he could feel it fall behind him as it oozed from his lips.

It was two seconds, just two small seconds was all it took. He shouldn’t be left alone, he shouldn’t be this hungry, and he should never have put faith in himself. The way that the blood called to him, how he could see it pumping against the skin of her neck before he was near her. Just three miles, he thought, three miles and she’s mine.

“I love you.”

His eyes cut, as they always did. Jacob hated how overbearing and smothering their relationship had become. His state -- nothing he’d had much control over -- was the rise and fall of every conversation.

Edward pressed his lips against the back of Jacob’s neck and he felt himself wince before he could stop it. He turned instinctively, his hand on Edward’s jaw -- all of this like memories of before and never again -- and he sighed an apology because words never made a difference anymore.

Flash and he’s alone. Staring at the hard wood floors of yet another cabin, yet another state, yet another promise he can’t keep.

···

A bed both of them rarely sleep in let alone fuck in; the dust covering it and making it unbearable to settle into. He never thought he’d mirror Edward in hobbies.

Every single day he fought a thirst that rivaled any hunger craving he’d experienced in the years neither of them spoke of. There was no before, only now and this moment and are you okay? All that mattered was his mood, his thirst, his fake smiles.

Those were what stung Edward the most: Jacob attempting a smile that wasn’t his anymore and all the pieces of Jacob that fell out of him each day that neither of them bothered to retrieve.

···

“It’s been four days, Jake.”

Jacob groaned. Yes, remind me because I’m sure I wouldn’t have remembered.

Edward’s face showed his contempt and he kneeled before him in the floor.

“It doesn’t have to be this difficult, Jake. Please.”

Edward’s hand traced the curve of his jaw and he slapped his hand away.

“Let’s not kid ourselves. We aren’t the same anymore, Edward. I know I’m not the only one thinking it.”

The scent of her stung his throat, no it was a burning. Like fire creeping up from his toes to his stomach and then into his mouth and he wanted to spit the venom from him, letting it drip from his lips, remind him of what he was.

He ran hard and slammed into her with enough force to break more bones than he meant to. His mouth hovered over her throat, the veins pumping harder and harder before his tongue traced a line to her ear. He looked into her eyes and for a second saw more of her than he needed to, not when he was going to do this.

His eyes closed and for a moment his grip loosened on her, his eyes going back to their golden hue but she whispered please and all he saw was the curve of her neck and how it could, no, would fit his lips perfectly.

···

When he’d drained her, he didn’t let her fall to the ground like so much garbage. He cradled her in his arms, his chest feeling entirely too small and his hands trembling.

He wondered how long it would be before Edward found him this time. And the tightness in his chest worsened as Edward’s form appeared in his mind.

He held her too tight and he heard more of her break in his arms. More of him, the last pieces of who he was -- the wolf he’d been not that long ago -- finally slipping away.
